Receiving the Gifts We Were Given on Shavuot

Topic: Holidays & Time Zones | Posted: May 14, 2013

As is explained in many of the writings of the kabbalists, Shabbat Naso is a very significant Shabbat. There is the regular explanation of this week’s portion in the Zohar, but there is also something very unique: the revelation of what is called the Idra Rabba, or the Great Assembly. The Zohar explains different secrets and understandings of the sections in the Torah, but all of the secrets that are revealed in the Zohar are within the Idra Rabba. So, why is the Idra Rabba revealed on this Shabbat? The question begins to open up our understanding of the great and unique gift of Shavuot that led into this Shabbat. What are the secrets that the Zohar reveals? The answer goes back to a basic teaching of Rav Ashlag. He says it is the purpose of our spiritual work to begin to taste and feel the Light of the Creator with all of our senses; the power and gift of the night of Shavuot is that... read more

Bribing Ourselves

Topic: Astrology | Posted: May 13, 2013

There is an aspect this month - the month of Sivan - that deals with the concept of bribes. Kabbalists explain that we frequently bribe ourselves. How? When we do something negative we say, “True, I’ve done a negative action, but look at all the positive actions I have also done,” as though somehow they cancel each other out. But whenever we allow our Light to overshadow our consciousness of our own darkness, we are bribing ourselves. We are buying ourselves off and allowing ourselves to compromise. In the commentaries on the Torah about Sivan and its sign of Gemini, there is a very interesting story regarding Rebecca, the wife of Isaac and the mother of the twins, Jacob and Esau. When Rebecca was pregnant, whenever she walked past a place of positive energy, one of the twins would want to jump out of her womb. And whenever she passed a negative place, the other child wanted to.... read more

The Secret of the Flags

Topic: Kabbalistic Concepts | Posted: May 8, 2013

There is a very famous section in the Midrash in regards to the portion of Bamidbar, and I read it almost every year as I come to this Shabbat. The Midrash says that when the Creator revealed the Light at Sinai, 240,000 angels came down surrounding it. And it says that each one of the angels had a flag. Interestingly, when the Israelites saw the great Light of the Creator, and the great love the Creator was showing them during this revelation, their singular request was: we want flags too. Really? This seems kind of silly; you are at the greatest revelation in all of history, you see angels holding flags… and your greatest desire at that point is to have a flag also? The Creator on this Shabbat comes to Moses, and says, do you remember at Sinai the Israelites desired flags? I want to fulfill their desire and give them flags - let’s count them, set them up, and arrange them. But the... read more

Building a Bridge of Certainty

Topic: Kabbalistic Concepts | Posted: May 1, 2013

This week’s portion begins with a discussion of what’s called shmittah, the seventh year when no work of the land is supposed to be done. You can work for six years, but on the seventh, you must stop. In those days almost everyone’s food came from the fields they worked; most people were farmers and sold whatever extra they had to other people. Essentially, if they didn’t work their fields, they would not eat. But the Creator tells them, even though this is how you make your livelihood, you cannot work on the seventh year. This could be quite a problem for them, because if you do not work in the seventh year, you certainly don't have food in the eighth year, and then the food won’t come until the ninth year because you’ll have to work the whole eighth year… but the Creator tells them not to worry, because miraculously, they will have food. Relating it to our lives today, it would be... read more
